Keep your IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) photorejuvenation and laser hair removal treatments safe and effective with this ultimate prep guide from skin care experts in Comox Valley, BC.

Questions? Ask Comox Valley’s laser hair removal and IPL photorejuvenation expert laser technicians.

If you’ve already booked your intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacial and/or laser hair removal treatment at Clinic 5 Collective in Courtenay, BC, congratulations—you’re on your way to a healthier complexion and/or smoother skin.

Now that you have your Clinic 5 Collective treatments in the calendar, it’s time to prepare. Think of the preparation for any IPL or laser hair removal treatment as you would surgery prep: you wouldn’t ignore your doctor’s instructions, and you shouldn’t skip your IPL and laser hair removal prep either.

While these treatments are quick and convenient, a little prep (and aftercare) makes all the difference in protecting your skin and helping the laser do its job effectively. Even if you feel relaxed heading into your appointment (good, you should!), it’s worth taking these preparation tips seriously. Good prep and aftercare not only supports the best results, it ensures the laser can effectively target hair follicles while minimizing risks like burns, discomfort, and skin irritation.

Your Preparation Guide for IPL & Laser Hair Removal

At Clinic 5 Collective in the Comox Valley, we take your safety seriously when it comes to IPL photofacials and laser hair removal. These treatments use powerful light energy, which means your skin must be in the right condition for the technology to work safely and effectively. That’s why we outline a strict prep timeline below—covering what to stop weeks, days, and even hours before your appointment. If these steps aren’t followed, your technician may have to reschedule or turn you away on treatment day. It’s not about inconvenience, it’s about protecting your skin from burns, irritation, or poor results while ensuring you see the smooth, even-toned outcomes you’re investing in.

4–8 Weeks Before
  • Stop waxing, plucking, and threading (laser hair removal). These remove the follicle entirely, which the light energy needs to target. Stick to shaving only.
  • Disclose medications/supplements. Tell your provider if you’re on antibiotics, isotretinoin (Accutane), blood thinners, or anything that increases sun sensitivity.
  • Notify us about tattoos or permanent makeup (including microblading). IPL and laser cannot be performed over tattoos. We’ll adjust your treatment plan to work around them safely.
4 Weeks Before
  • Avoid all tanning and self-tanners. No tanning beds, spray tans, or extended sun exposure. Tanned or sunburned skin raises the risk of burns and pigmentation issues.
  • Pause neurotoxin injections (Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, etc.). Stop at least 1 week before and after; fillers should be paused 2 weeks before and after, since swelling or bruising can interfere with results.
1 Week Before
  • Stop irritating or thinning products. This includes retinoids, tretinoin, vitamin C, glycolic/salicylic acids, AHAs, BHAs, and bleaching creams. Give your skin time to restore its barrier.
  • Pause cosmetic injections (IPL). Leave at least 7 days between IPL/laser and neuromodulators, and 14 days for dermal fillers.
2–3 Days Before
  • Skip fragranced products. No perfumes, essential oils, or fragranced lotions on the treatment area. These can increase irritation under the laser or IPL light.
24 Hours Before
  • Shave the treatment area (laser hair removal). Shave 12–24 hours before. Surface hair should be gone so the light reaches the follicle safely, but the follicle itself must remain intact.
  • Avoid alcohol. Alcohol thins the blood and can make your skin more sensitive, increasing the risk of redness, swelling, or bruising after treatment. It can also dehydrate you, and hydrated skin responds better to light-based treatments.
  • Limit coffee or other caffeinated drinks on the day of your appointment. Caffeine doesn’t interact with the laser itself, but it can make some people more anxious or jittery, and may heighten sensitivity to the “snap” feeling during treatment. So in other words, coffee won’t ruin your results, but too much might make the session feel more painful. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, it’s best to have water or just a small cup before your appointment.

What do I need to do the day of my treatment? | IPL & Laser Hair Removal: What To Expect

On the day of your appointment, arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. Do not apply lotions, deodorants, or perfumes to the treatment area, as these can interfere with the laser. If shaving is required, do this the night before or the morning of your session.

During treatment, protective eyewear will be provided. A cooling gel will be applied to improve comfort, and then quick pulses of light are delivered to the targeted area. Many clients describe the sensation as a warm snap—similar to a rubber band lightly tapping the skin. Most find it very tolerable, especially with the built-in cooling of our advanced devices.

Depending on the size of the area, IPL or laser hair removal sessions can last anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. After treatment, your skin may look red or feel slightly warm, like a mild sunburn. This usually fades within a few hours, though pigmented areas may temporarily darken before naturally flaking away in the days following.

Before leaving, your provider will review aftercare instructions so you know exactly how to care for the treatment area properly in the upcoming days and weeks.

Your Post Care Guide for IPL & Laser Hair Removal

After your session, your skin will be more sensitive, and good aftercare is essential to healing and results. Most clients notice mild redness, warmth, or swelling—similar to a light sunburn—that resolves within a few hours to a couple of days. A cool compress or soothing aloe vera can help with comfort.

Immediate Effects & Comfort
  • Redness, warmth, or mild swelling is normal; usually resolves in hours to days.
  • Apply a cool compress or soothing aloe vera if needed.
  • Use lightweight, breathable makeup only if necessary.
UV Protection (2+ Weeks)
  • Avoid direct sun, tanning beds, and self-tanners.
  • Apply SPF 30+ broad-spectrum daily and reapply as needed.
  • Wear hats and protective clothing outdoors.
Skin Recovery
  • Dark spots or treated hair may darken before flaking/shedding—this is normal.
  • Do not scratch, pick, or exfoliate too soon.
  • Stick to gentle cleansers, fragrance-free moisturizers, and mineral sunscreen.
  • Avoid retinoids, tretinoin, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, scrubs, and harsh products for at least a week or until cleared by your provider.
Heat & Sweat
  • Avoid saunas, hot tubs, and strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours.
  • Heat and sweat can worsen redness or irritation while your skin is sensitive.
Long-Term Care
  • Both IPL and laser hair removal work best as a series of treatments.
  • Expect gradual improvements that build with each session.
  • With proper post-care, you’ll enjoy clearer, smoother, and more radiant skin.

IPL & Laser Hair Removal Frequently Asked Questions

IPL & Laser Hair Removal Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between IPL and Laser Hair Removal?

Both IPL and laser treatments use light energy, but they’re designed to target different concerns. The main difference comes down to the type of light they use, and what that light is best at treating.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) devices release a broad spectrum of light wavelengths. Because the light spreads out, it doesn’t just target pigment in the hair follicle—it also affects pigment in the skin. That’s why IPL energy must be kept gentler, and why it often requires more sessions. IPL works best for lighter skin tones and is best used for skin rejuvenation rather than hair removal.

At our Comox Valley medical aesthetics clinic, we use Lumecca, a leading IPL device that treats sun damage, pigmentation, redness, rosacea, and visible vessels. Results can often be seen after just one to three sessions, with common treatment areas including the face, neck, décolletage, hands, arms, and legs.

Laser hair removal devices on the other hand emit a single, concentrated wavelength of light that directly targets the hair follicle. This precision means energy can be delivered more effectively, making laser treatments safe for a wider range of skin types, and usually requiring fewer sessions compared to IPL.

Our Courtenay clinic offers Diolaze XL, one of the most advanced laser hair removal systems available. With built-in cooling for comfort and a large treatment tip that speeds up sessions, it’s often quick enough to book on a lunch break. By targeting both the root and follicle, Diolaze safely prevents future hair growth for smooth, long-lasting results.

Why might I be turned away from receiving IPL or laser hair removal?

Not everyone is a candidate for IPL or laser hair removal at every visit. Because these are powerful, light-based treatments, your safety always comes first. If your skin isn’t properly prepared—or if there are factors that increase your risk—we may need to reschedule your appointment.

Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Recent tanning or sun exposure – Tanned skin increases the risk of burns, hyperpigmentation, and scarring.
  • Active skincare ingredients – Retinoids, acids, or exfoliants can make skin too sensitive to safely treat.
  • Hair removal methods that remove the follicle – Waxing, plucking, or threading prevent the laser from targeting the root effectively.
  • Certain medications or health conditions – Blood thinners, photosensitizing drugs, or active infections may make treatment unsafe.
  • Untreated tattoos or microblading in the treatment area (cannot safely laser over them).

Following your pre-treatment prep ensures your skin responds well and minimizes risks. In the Comox Valley, fall and winter are the ideal seasons to start your IPL or laser hair removal journey, thanks to lower UV levels and more opportunities to cover up while your skin heals. If you fail to follow the preparation guidelines provided by our laser technicians at Clinic 5 Collective, we may turn you away from treatment for your own safety.

Laser Hair Removal

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal at Clinic 5 Collective uses the advanced Diolaze XL system, which delivers a concentrated beam of light to target the pigment (melanin) inside the hair follicle. The light energy is absorbed and converted into heat, damaging the follicle and inhibiting future growth. With its large treatment spot size and built-in cooling technology, Diolaze XL makes sessions faster and more comfortable while protecting surrounding skin. Over time, as more follicles are treated and become inactive, hair grows back finer, lighter, and less noticeable until many areas remain permanently smooth.

How can I support my laser hair removal results?

Laser hair removal is most effective when your skin and follicles are in the right condition. To get smooth, lasting results with Diolaze XL, consistency and care matter. Stay on schedule with your treatments—typically every 4–6 weeks for the face and 6–8 weeks for the body—so the laser can catch hairs during their active growth phase. Protect your skin before and after each session by avoiding tanning, self-tanners, or prolonged sun exposure, and always apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+.

Between sessions, shave only—never wax or pluck—so the follicle remains intact for the laser to target. In the days surrounding your appointment, skip strong exfoliants, retinoids, or acids, and instead stick to gentle cleansers, soothing moisturizers, and mineral sunscreen. Finally, support your skin from within by staying hydrated, eating a nutrient-rich diet, and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol. Together, these steps ensure each treatment is as effective and comfortable as possible, leading to smoother, longer-lasting

What should I NOT do after laser hair removal?

After laser hair removal, your skin is more sensitive and requires careful aftercare to protect your results. For the first 24 to 48 hours, it’s best to avoid heat and sweating—skip hot showers, saunas, hot tubs, and intense workouts—as well as harsh or fragranced skincare products that can irritate the treated area. For the next one to two weeks, you’ll want to stay out of the sun, tanning beds, and away from self-tanners, since UV exposure or added pigment can raise your risk of burns, pigmentation changes, and uneven results.

Always use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ if you’re outdoors, and let your skin shed or hair release naturally without scratching, picking, or exfoliating. Alcohol should be avoided immediately after treatment because it can prolong redness and swelling, and while caffeine won’t affect your outcome, too much can heighten sensitivity during the session. In short, protect your skin from heat, sun, and harsh products, and stick with gentle cleansers, soothing moisturizers, and mineral sunscreen until your provider clears you to return to your usual routine

IPL Photorejuvenation

What does IPL photorejuvenation treat?

IPL devices emit broad-spectrum flashes of light, usually between 500 and 1200 nm. Unlike lasers, which deliver a single wavelength, IPL uses multiple wavelengths and filters to target pigment and tiny blood vessels. When a specific chromophore—melanin in sun spots or hemoglobin in redness—absorbs the light, it heats up and is selectively destroyed while surrounding tissue remains unharmed. Because one device can address multiple targets, a single session can treat sun spots, broken capillaries and redness.

At Clinic 5 we use Lumecca, a leading IPL device that treats sun damage, pigmentation, redness, rosacea and visible vessels on the face, neck, décolletage, hands, arms and legs. Visible improvements are often seen after just one or two sessions, and most patients need between one and five treatments plus occasional maintenance to achieve and maintain a healthy glow. This high energy means your skin must be prepared; extra pigment from tanning or thinning from strong exfoliants can misdirect the light and increase the risk of burns.

Who should avoid IPL treatments?

IPL is safe for many people, but it isn’t appropriate for everyone. Avoid it if you are pregnant or nursing, under 18, have an impaired immune system, uncontrolled endocrine disorders or certain skin conditions. You should also wait if you’ve taken Accutane (isotretinoin) within the past six months. Those with very dark skin tones or a history of keloids should consult a provider because of an increased risk of pigment changes. Always disclose medications, supplements and health conditions during your consultation.

How should I prepare my skin before my IPL treatment?

Four weeks before your appointment: Stay out of the sun. Lumecca’s guidelines specify no tanning—no sun, tanning beds, spray tans or self-tanners—for at least four weeks before and after your treatment. Sun exposure increases melanin, which competes with your treatment target and raises the risk of burns.

One week before: Pause products that thin or irritate skin. Stop prescription retinoids, over-the-counter retinol, vitamin C, glycolic or salicylic acids and bleaching creams for at least a week before treatment. This allows your skin to rebuild its protective barrier. Limit cosmetic injections to at least a week before or after your IPL session; for dermal fillers, allow at least two weeks. In the final two to three days before your appointment, skip perfumes, essential oils and fragranced skincare on the area to be treated.

The day before: Avoid plucking, waxing or threading hair in the treatment area—removing the follicle completely can interfere with your results. If shaving is required, do this the night before or the morning of your session. Check with your provider if any medications you take increase photosensitivity; some antibiotics and acne medications can make skin more sensitive to light.

Day of treatment: Arrive with clean, product-free skin—no lotions, deodorants, perfumes, makeup or self-tanner on the area. Stay hydrated, and expect to feel a warm snapping sensation during the brief pulses of light; protective eyewear will be provided and Lumecca’s built-in cooling helps with comfort. Treatment time depends on the area but typically lasts 15 to 60 minutes.

To make sure you get the best results, there are a few things we need you to avoid. Prescription retinoids, over-the-counter retinol, glycolic and salicylic acids and bleaching creams can thin the epidermis and make your skin too sensitive for IPL, so pause them at least a week before your appointment. Tanning—whether from the sun, a bed or a bottle—adds melanin that competes with the light’s target and increases the risk of burns. Plan to stay out of the sun and skip self-tanners for at least four weeks before and after your session. Think of these measures like the pre-op instructions your surgeon would give you: essential steps to keep you safe and ensure the best outcome.

How can I support my IPL results?

The condition of your skin plays a major role in how well you respond to light-based treatments like IPL and laser hair removal. Skin that is hydrated, resilient, and protected recovers faster and achieves better results. That’s why we recommend pairing your treatments with a daily Vivier® Program. These medical-grade routines combine cleansers, antioxidants, moisturizers, and SPF in one system, giving your skin consistent support every single day.

Each Vivier® Program is designed for a specific skin need:

  • Youth Preserve Program – best for younger skin or those noticing the first signs of aging; helps prevent fine lines with retinol, vitamin C, and SPF.
  • Essential Anti-Aging Program – targets fine lines, uneven tone, and early texture changes while supporting collagen and skin clarity.
  • Sensitive Skin Program – strengthens the barrier and calms irritation, perfect for redness-prone or easily reactive skin.
  • Advanced Anti-Aging Program – formulated for more advanced concerns such as deeper wrinkles and loss of firmness.
  • Brighten & Restore Program (Non-HQ) – improves dark spots, pigmentation, and uneven skin tone, restoring brightness and clarity.

By spending just a few minutes morning and night with the right Vivier® Program, you create a strong foundation that helps your skin tolerate treatments more comfortably, recover more efficiently, and maintain results longer. What should I NOT do after an IPL?

After your session, your skin will be more sensitive than usual. Most clients notice mild redness, warmth or swelling that resolves within a few hours to a couple of days. Applying a cool compress or soothing aloe vera gel can help with comfort. For the first 24 to 48 hours, avoid heat—no hot showers, saunas, hot tubs or strenuous exercise—and cleanse gently with cool water, patting the skin dry.

Protecting your skin from UV exposure is critical while you heal. For at least two weeks, avoid direct sun, tanning beds and self-tanners. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily and reapply regularly; hats and protective clothing offer extra protection. You may notice dark spots or treated hair becoming temporarily darker before fading or shedding. This is part of the healing process—do not scratch, pick or exfoliate too soon. Stick to gentle cleansers, fragrance-free moisturisers and mineral sunscreen for at least a week, and avoid retinoids, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs and other harsh products until cleared by your provider.

Heat and sweat can worsen redness or irritation, so avoid saunas, hot tubs and vigorous workouts for 24–48 hours. Laser and IPL treatments usually work best as a series; facial areas may need sessions every four weeks and body areas every six weeks. Over time you’ll notice smoother, clearer and more even skin. Most people experience no serious side effects beyond mild redness or warmth, but if you notice blistering or signs of infection, contact the clinic right away. As always, drink plenty of water and eat antioxidant-rich foods to support healing.
