  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy uses high‑energy bursts of broad‑spectrum light to target unwanted pigment and tiny blood vessels in your skin. Instead of one precise wavelength like a laser, IPL devices emit a range of wavelengths—like a customizable floodlight. By placing different filters over the handpiece, we “tune” that light to focus on specific colours: melanin in a sun spot, or hemoglobin in a broken capillary, for instance. The targeted cells absorb the light and convert it to heat, breaking down dark pigment and tightening small vessels in a process called selective photothermolysis.

At Clinic 5 Collective in Courtenay BC, we use Lumecca®, a next‑generation IPL system that delivers up to three times more energy than many older devices. Built-in cooling keeps the surface of your skin comfortable, and because IPL works below the surface without removing the top layer, most people feel only mild warmth and see a little temporary redness.

  • IPL laser skin rejuvenation uses pulses of broad-spectrum light to stimulate your skin’s natural repair process. The light targets pigment and tiny blood vessels, heating collagen fibres and activating fibroblasts to produce new collagen and elastin—resulting in smoother, firmer, more even-toned skin.

    IPL effectively treats:

    • Sun Damage + Age Spots: Targets melanin to fade brown spots and balance pigmentation.

    • Redness + Rosacea: Shrinks tiny vessels and calms redness by focusing on hemoglobin.

    • Uneven Tone + Texture: Stimulates collagen renewal for smoother skin, refined pores, and improved luminosity.

    • Acne Scars + Dark Patches: Breaks down pigment to fade post-acne marks and soften scars.

At Clinic 5 Collective in Courtenay, IPL is most often performed on the full face, but patients also love it for the hands, half arms, décolletage (chest), and bridge of the nose and under-eye area. These are the first places to show signs of sun exposure and uneven pigmentation, and treating them together creates a more balanced, youthful glow.

  • IPL is ideal for anyone looking to reduce sun spots, redness, or uneven tone—but it isn’t suitable for everyone. At Clinic 5 Collective, we begin with a complimentary skin consultation to review your medical history, assess your skin, and create a safe, personalized treatment plan. IPL should be postponed if you’re pregnant or nursing, under 18, have an impaired immune or endocrine system, or are dealing with active skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, open wounds, or frequent cold sores. It’s also best to wait at least six months after using isotretinoin (Accutane) and to avoid treatment on recently tanned or sunburned skin. While settings can be adjusted for darker skin tones, we may recommend alternative treatments to minimize pigmentation risks. Be sure to mention any medications or supplements that increase light sensitivity so we can tailor your care safely.

  • Preparing properly for your IPL photofacial in Courtenay, BC helps ensure your treatment is safe, comfortable, and delivers the best possible results. Follow this quick pre-treatment checklist to get your skin ready for your Lumecca® or Intense Pulsed Light session at Clinic 5 Collective.

Avoid tanning Do not tan or use self-tanner for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment. Skin should not be tanned at the time of your session. Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds, as darker pigment can interfere with the light and increase the risk of irritation.

☐ Pause active skincare Stop using Retin-A, retinol, Renova, Differin, Tazorac, glycolic/salicylic acids, bleaching creams, and exfoliants for 3 days before treatment. These products thin or sensitize the skin, increasing the risk of reaction.

☐ Shave the area Shave any hair present in the treatment area. Men should shave beard areas twice in succession for a close shave. Avoid waxing, plucking, or depilatories for at least a week.

☐ Check medications Inform your provider if you’re taking antibiotics or photosensitizing medications, including certain anti-inflammatories or herbal supplements. These can heighten sensitivity to light.

☐ Prevent cold sores If you have a history of cold sores, begin an oral antiviral (as prescribed) 3 days before treatment to prevent outbreaks. IPL’s heat can trigger herpes simplex in susceptible patients.

☐ Arrive with clean skin Come in with no makeup, lotion, or sunscreen on the treatment area. Your skin will be cleansed before your session, but starting with a clean surface ensures the best light contact.

☐ Stay hydrated + rested Drink plenty of water and get a good night’s sleep before your appointment—healthy, hydrated skin responds best to IPL.

☐ Support your skin Maintain your results with gentle cleansers, antioxidants, and moisturizers. Our clinic carries  Vivier® and other medical-grade products designed to strengthen and protect your skin barrier.

  • When you arrive for your IPL photofacial in Courtenay, BC, you’ll be welcomed into a comfortable treatment room where we’ll walk you through every step. Your skin is cleansed and a clear gel is applied to help the light conduct evenly. You’ll wear protective eyewear while our certified technician moves the Lumecca® IPL handpiece across the treatment area, delivering precise pulses of light. Each pulse feels like a quick snap—often compared to the flick of a rubber band. We customize the intensity and filters to your skin type and goals to ensure optimal results. Because IPL is non-ablative and features integrated cooling, there’s little to no downtime.

  • Proper aftercare is key to maximizing your results and ensuring a smooth recovery following your IPL photofacial in Courtenay, BC. Your skin will be more sensitive for a few days after treatment, so following these simple steps is vital for keeping your skin protected and avoiding further damage.

☐ Expect mild sensitivity You may feel a light sunburn sensation after treatment—this usually fades within a few hours. Redness, slight swelling, or crusting can appear and may last up to 10 days.

☐ Use cold compresses if needed Apply cool compresses or ice packs to calm warmth or swelling. A small amount of hydrocortisone cream can reduce itching or irritation if recommended by your provider.

☐ Keep it gentle Your skin will be fragile for 2–3 days. Cleanse with lukewarm water and a mild cleanser, and avoid rubbing or scrubbing. You may moisturize right away, and makeup is fine as long as your skin isn’t broken.

☐ Protect from sun Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning creams between treatments. Always use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily and reapply every two hours when outdoors. A wide-brimmed hat provides extra protection.

☐ Avoid heat + sweating Skip hot tubs, saunas, whirlpools, and strenuous exercise for 24–48 hours or until redness has subsided. Stick to cool or lukewarm showers.

☐ Avoid irritants + exfoliants Pause Retin-A, retinol, glycolics, bleaching creams, and exfoliants for 2 weeks after treatment. Avoid chemical peels, facials, and microdermabrasion during this period.

☐ Let skin heal naturally Pigmented spots and freckles may darken or crust—this is normal. Allow them to flake off on their own within 7–10 days for best results.

☐ Stay hydrated + support recovery Drink plenty of water and use a gentle, hydrating moisturizer to maintain barrier strength.

  • Results vary by condition and skin type, but most people notice improvements within the first or second week. Brown spots often darken and then flake off; redness fades gradually. Clinical research suggests the best results emerge about one to two weeks after each session.

Because the effect is cumulative, improvement continues with subsequent treatments. If you’re targeting diffuse redness or deeper pigmentation, be patient. These concerns may require more sessions, and the skin needs time to flush away treated pigment. Expect your complexion to continue clearing and evening out over the course of several weeks.

  • Because IPL’s effect builds with each session, a series of treatments are usually recommended, depending on the individual’s concern.Follow-up treatment should be scheduled every 4 to 6 weeks until desired results are reached. Some studies suggest that three to six treatments spaced four weeks apart achieve the optimal results. The exact number depends on your skin concern, but the key is consistency for the best results.

    • For pigmentation and sun damage most individuals see significant, visible improvement in one to three initial sessions with regular maintenance treatments once desired results are achieved.

    • For diffuse redness (rosacea) or blood vessels most individuals need two to five sessions for best results, as these vascular lesions can be more stubborn to clear.

    • For maintenance after your initial series, we recommend treatments every six to 12 months to keep pigmentation and vascular concerns under control and to support ongoing collagen regeneration.

During your consultation we’ll tailor a plan based on your goals and skin type. For example, some clients pair IPL with a Bela MD+  facial or microneedling session for an even more comprehensive treatment.
